Reese Witherspoon, Jake Gyllenhaal, Meryl Streep, Peter Saarsgaard and Alan Arkin head an all-star ensemble cast in “Rendition,” a compelling thriller from Academy Award-winning director Gavin Hood (“Tsotsi”). Witherspoon plays Isabella El-Ibrahimi, the American wife of Egyptian-born chemical engineer Anwar El-Ibrahimi (Omar Metwally) who disappears on a flight from South Africa to Washington. Isabella desperately tries to track her husband down, while a CIA analyst (Gyllenhaal) at a secret detention facility outside the U.S. is forced to question his assignment as he becomes party to the man’s unorthodox interrogation. “Rendition” is produced by Steve Golin (“Babel”) and Marcus Viscidi (“The Last Kiss”) from a screenplay by Kelly Sane. This movie actually looks rather interesting. In law, rendition is a “surrender” or “handing over” of persons or property, particularly from one jurisdiction to another. For criminal suspects, extradition is the most common type of rendition. Rendition can also be seen as the act of handing over, after the request for extradition has taken place.
This movie has that Donnie Darko/Zodiac guy and shows a family loving husband taken away because a phone call he made during his trip was somehow linked to terrorists. Donnie Darko guy is the one doing the interrogation. Meanwhile, the family at home has no idea what happens and can only ask for help from someone at the airline which the husband should’ve flown back on.
