Japanese siblings Rintaro and Atsuko are visiting the United States for the first time. They are headed for San Francisco when their rental car breaks down in the California desert town of Littlerock. Despite the cultural and language barriers, they soon fall in with a group of aimless young locals, including an awkward outcast named Cory who is clearly taken with Atsuko. She finds a fumbling romance with another boy instead, even though the two cannot communicate with one another. Atsuko is seduced by this foreign place and wants to stay for awhile. Her brother Rintaro is soured by what he detects as its darker side. Despite all of this, Rintaro continues on as his sister is determined to embrace California as the storied refuge from troubles. (
A sleepy-eyed exurb of Los Angeles is seen through the eyes of two young Japanese tourists, stranded there with a broken rental car. Rintaro wants to leave as soon as possible, but Atsuko finds both the small town and the aimless lifestyle of the young people who live there fascinating- and, just maybe, a better example of the America she’s been hoping to see than the big cities they’ve been traveling between. As she hangs around with the locals and begins to understand their lives (despite not speaking any English), she finds it increasingly hard to leave. The excitement of the new permeates every frame of this intimate evocation of a small town where everyone’s talking, but no one really understands. (
