At the beginning of the 20th century, China is in a state of crisis. The country is split into warring factions, the citizens are starving, and recent political reforms have made matters worse, not better. The ruling Qing Dynasty, led by a seven-year-old emperor, is completely out of touch after 250 years of unquestioned power.

With ordinary citizens beginning to revolt openly, the Qing Dynasty has created a powerful, modern army (the “New Army”) to quash any rebellion. But weapons are expensive, and desperate for cash, the Qing leaders are trading anything they can get their hands on with foreign countries…and selling China’s future in the process.

‘The Black Power Mixtape 1967-1975’ mobilizes a treasure trove of 16mm material shot by Swedish journalists who came to the US drawn by stories of urban unrest and revolution. Gaining access to many of the leaders of the Black Power Movement–Stokely Carmichael, Bobby Seale, Angela Davis and Eldridge Cleaver among them–the filmmakers captured them in intimate moments and remarkably unguarded interviews. Thirty years later, this lush collection was found languishing in the basement of Swedish Television. The politics of the past and present begin to merge during the making of a motion picture in this drama from director Iciar Bollain. Spanish movie director Sebastian (Gael Garcia Bernal) and his producer Costa (Luis Tosar) have arrived in Bolivia to shoot a picture about Columbus’s exploration and exploitation of the New World. While Sebastian has come to Bolivia for realistic scenery, Costa has chosen the location for the cheap and abundant supply of labor. An open casting call for extras attracts far more people than the picture needs, but when Costas tries to send them away, one would-be actor, Daniel (Juan Carlos Aduviri), makes a strong and eloquent case for fair treatment of the locals, and Sebastian casts him as Hatuey, the chief of a native tribe who fought the invading Spaniards. As Sebastian stages scenes of revolt against would-be colonists, a real battle is brewing in Colombia — the government has privatized the national water works, and the price of water has jumped by three hundred percent, leading to protests and riots in the streets of Cochabamba. Daniel is one of the activists protesting price gouging for something as essential as water; will Sebastian and his colleagues join him in speaking out against this injustice? Tangshan, 1976. Two seven-year-old twin children are buried under the rubble of the devastating earthquake. The rescue team explains to their mother, Li Yuanni, that freeing either child will almost certainly result in the death of the other. Forced to make the most difficult decision of her life, she finally chooses to save her son Fang Da, the male twin. Li Yuanni has no idea that her decision is overheard by her daughter Fang Deng, the female twin. Although she has been left behind as dead, the little girl miraculously survives for several more days before being pulled clear by another rescue team who believe that she is simply a corpse. She wakes up in the pouring rain next to the dead body of her father. Suffering from the emotional shocks of the disaster and the painful memory of her mother’s choice, Fang Deng refuses to reveal her identity. She is adopted by a middle-aged Chinese couple and years later moves to Canada to marry. Shadowed by the traumatic experiences of the earthquake and devastated by her mother’s decision to abandon her, she continues to be emotionally withdrawn throughout her adult years. Sichuan, 2008. 32 years later, when the Sichuan earthquake takes more lives, Fang Deng returns to China as a volunteer with a rescue team. The process of witnessing other people’s suffering at the time of a natural disaster helps her to overcome her own trauma and forgive her mother. She finally reunites with her family after 32 years apart. (Source)
