  1. MY RATING: 6/10

Honestly, I thought the acting in this movie was superb. Christian Bale is one of my favorite actors and Russell Crowe was magnificent too. Charlie Foster put up an extremely good act also. The cinematography was also excellent. However, I was very disappointed with the ending. It was so unbelievable and illogical, I had to actually drop it from a rating of 8/10 to 6/10.

    *** SPOILER ALERT ***

I have to say, the ending of the movie was very disappointing. It wasn’t the fact that they killed off Dan (Christian Bale), which was indeed sad, but the fact it made no sense. All this time, Wade (Russell Crowe) has been trying to escape, but when his real chance arrives and his accomplices come to rescue him, he not only ignores them, but follows Dan and remains a captive. Maybe Dan’s story touched him or maybe Wade was in it for the fun to see how long this can last. But the ending where Wade goes and shoots and kills every single one of his buddies blew my mind… Was he avenging Dan’s death again his buddies who were trying to rescue him. I was like WTF just happened?!?!?!

He finally ends getting onto the train and behind the bars and sits on his train ride to Yuma. My friend said maybe he wanted to have an interesting story to tell, about how a 1-legged single man sent him to prison. Given the fact that he’s escaped twice from Yuma already, I don’t see why this would make any difference. However, the reasoning didn’t work that well for me since he didn’t really talk about his previous captures.

Finally, did the drawings have any significance to the story? The movie starts out with him drawing a bird (hawk? eagle?). Later on, he draws the naked bar lady. Finally, he draws Dan sitting there with a serious face. I never figured out the significance, but maybe someone can tell me.

It turns out this movie was actually a remake and the original was made in 1957. Reading the synopsis of the 1957 version, the ending made so much more sense! I don’t understand why the remake ended so horribly.

After Bob forces Butterfield to reveal that his brother’s killer is upstairs, Bob breaks in the door to the bridal suite, determined to kill Wade. Dan protects Wade, but in the ensuing struggle, Bob’s gun fires, alerting the customer Butterfield noticed sleeping in the lobby, Wade’s henchman, Charlie Prince.

As the train starts to pull out, the gang emerges from behind the billowing smoke and Charlie urges Wade to run so that he can have a clear shot at Dan. Wade refuses to budge, however, and unexpectedly agrees to follow Dan’s orders and jump into the passing baggage car. Once inside, Wade explains that he owed Dan for saving his life back at the hotel. As the train passes Alice waiting by the tracks in her carriage, Dan waves at her and it begins to pour.

In this movie, the reason why Wade agrees to follow Dan to the train, was because Dan actually protected him earlier. That never happened in the remake probably because some of the characters have changed. Dan also doesn’t die in this movie due to the fact Wade stands in front to protect him from Charlie and the others from shooting at him. It appears both Dan and Wade successfully escapes on the train. Now that made a lot more sense.
